Home Water Use Check-Up

One of the most valuable skills we can learn is how to conserve natural resources like water.  We hope you will spend a few minutes completing this home water use check-up.  You’ll learn a lot about your family’s water habits.  You may also discover ways to cut your water use and water and electric bills.  This survey will tell you how much water your family uses daily.  Your family may need to help with some answers.  Answer only questions that apply to you.

 

1. Was your house or condominium/apartment building constructed before 1994?   

 

2.  Showers.  How many showers do the members of your household take a day?  About how long is each one?  Add the figures and fill in below.

       Number of showers x number of minutes = total shower time per day

 

3.  Baths.  How many baths do the members of your household take a day?  A half-full tub is about 18 gallons, a full tub about 36 gallons.

Number in household x number of baths = total baths per day

 

4.   Toilets.  How many times do the members of your household flush the toilet? (The average is four flushes per person.)

Number in household x flushes per day = total flushes per day

 

5.  Dishwasher.  Answer only if you have one.  How many times a week do the members of your household run the dishwasher?

Uses per week ÷ 7 days per week = average uses per day

 

6.   Laundry.  Answer only if you have a washing machine.  How many loads of laundry do the members of your household do each week?

Loads per week ÷ 7 days per week = average uses per day

 

7.  Lawn Watering.  Do not answer if you are a resident of an apartment or condominium, but DO answer if you are in charge of the landscaping of the apartment or condominium.  How many times a week do you water your lawn under normal circumstances?  How many minutes do you water each time?

Watering days per week x watering minutes per day = total minutes per week

Total watering minutes per week ÷ 7 days = average watering time per day

 

8. Do you have an irrigation system?     Do you have a rain sensor installed?
